Unusual Wedding Gifts

September 3rd, 2010

Anyone who is familiar with search tools such as “Google keyword tool”, will soon discover that Wedding Gifts for some of the wedding party (such as Brother of the Bride and Brother of the Groom) are rarely searched for. Imagine our dilema then when we purchased not only Brother of the Bride and Brother of the Groom cufflinks, but also Grandfather of the Bride and Grandfather of the Groom… you get the picture.

Lucky for us then, that not only are we engravers for the UK’s Personalised Gifts Specialist ‘Personalised Gift Ideas‘, but we also have our own in-house design team and a creative bunch of individuals, who are always eager to have their say as part of the P.G.I Team. So what did we come up with then? Well you can never go wrong with glassware, so out-popped the old whisky glasses, pint tankards, not to mention wine glasses – in other words, the usual suspects and before you know it, we are all ready to start building all sorts of categories which Google doesn’t think important enough, but deep down we all know you really really don’t want to forget about these important members of the wedding party.

Other great news (for us at least) – our new expensive barcode scanner is now fully operational and now only requires a pep-talk with the PGI Team about, “One team, one vision” and then to break the news that it will take at least two weeks of hard graft to re-label all the stock!

Stock Control Systems

August 31st, 2010

This is actually our second post about stock control systems … why? Well it turns out that the picture of the scanner we previously posted is the scanner we have rather than the scanner we need!

Unfortunately the Inventory Control package we purchased uses the same description for all the packages and therefore we have ended up with a “point of sale” scanner which is about as much use in a warehouse environment as a chocolate fire guard – If anyone is old enough to remember what a fireguard is!

As with most mini day to day crises the solution is fairly straightforward (if somewhat teeth grittingly annoying) – pay an extra several hundred pounds and exchange the scanner for one that is fit for purpose.

Another setback was the testimonials relating to “ease of use” did not reflect the “complexity of installation”. It has taken hours of online problem solving and phone calls to get to our current position of re labelling all our stock with Bar Codes … all we need now is a scanner that doesn’t require me pulling a PC around after me!

New Stock Control System

August 24th, 2010

Good news and a big change at Personalised Gift Ideas. After a weekend of waiting, despite paying for ‘next day delivery’, our new stock control system has ARRIVED!

It did take us the good part of an afternoon to read through the manuals, but our barcode printer, barcode scanner and software are all set up.

What should this system allow us to do?

The ‘Wasp’ system is a stock management system which allows companies to easily keep track of their incoming and outgoing stock. We should be able to use a barcode system to label every single item in our warehouse. Once a customer orders an item and the item needs to be taken off the shelf, the barcode should be scanned and the stock number will be reduced by the number of items.

With effective stock management, we know that we will become much more effecient and will be able to much more effectively buy in new stock, when necessary.

Fingers crossed the barcode creation goes accordingly to plan.

Engraving: Grammar and Font sizing tips

August 17th, 2010

As the UK’s Personalised Gifts Specialist we have received a lot of testimonials about our engraving. For anyone looking to start an engraving business or to improve on a current service then here a few tips on the subject …

  • Grammar: An engraving layout breaks up lines outwith sentences. Adding grammar isn’t always appropriate as a new line may well make adding a comma redundant. Grammar within a line is however still appropriate.
  • Font Sizing: Think of font sizing along the lines of Grammar. Ultimately you wish to emphasise certain words within a message. Consider making the recipients name more pronounced and quite possibly dates less so … Dates often look oversized so don’t just engrave lines of text and dates without regard for visual appeal.

I have included the above example for two reasons ….

  1. It shows the advantage of using a photo studio for images!
  2. Although a simple message many engravers would use a single font and font size for both lines – we believe that a little thought makes a big difference.

Friday Tidy

August 13th, 2010

I would think that some of you will be able to relate to this post in some way, as most of you will at some stage have moved house. Having moved from our previous business unit in November 2009 and with Christmas looming, the ‘move’ was rather hurried to say the least. It wasn’ t so much a case of ’settling in’, more a case of ‘get in and get going’. The long and short of the story is that now, in August of 2010, it is finally time for a good clear out in the P.G.I Warehouse.

With 8 members of staff, over 1000 products and many more new designs and products planned for 2010, the workshop and warehouse need to be re-arranged in order to maximise our efficiency. Christmas is just around the corner and when more and more orders come through our systems, our engravers and packers must be able to work quickly and effectively to get your orders out as quickly as possible.

Currently, when new stock arrives, the boxes sit in the workshop for the best part of a week, before there is enough time and space to move the items onto our warehouse shelves – NOT ANY MORE… We’re going through the planning stages of implementing a new stock management system, which will not only allow us to keep track of stock more easily, but will also allow us to organise new stock as soon as it arrives at our business unit.

Well, best get to it!

Argos offering same-day delivery – will it work?

August 6th, 2010

For this post, we thought that it seemed appropriate to open up a new category in our Wordpress Blog: “Online Retail”. After reading an article on 4th August 2010, which announced the news that the retail giant Argos is to be trialing a ’same-day’ delivery service in London, we thought the issue of ‘delivery times’ seemed relevant.

The article explains….

The retailer has teamed up with same-day delivery start-up Shutl for the trial, which will last six months. The service is available to customers with a central London postcode with prices starting at £4.95.

Eligible shoppers will be able to choose the Shutl delivery option on their reservation page, with the option to ‘Shutl now’ or ‘Shutl later’. The second option allows customers to choose a delivery time within a 48-hour reservation window.

Once they confirm their order, Shutl will send them a tracking email which lets them watch their delivery process in real time on a GPS-enabled map.

The service is being made available for a one-hour delivery slot between 9am and 9pm, seven days a week.

Our thoughts…

As a company who offers the fastest UK delivery for the skilled art of gold blocking coloured and HB pencils, we understand that fast delivery times is something which customers value.

Personalisation requires both high-tech machinery, skilled operators and of course, time. We quote a despatch estimate of 3-5 working days on most of our personalised items and believe that we offer an extremely high level of service to our customers.

The difference between Personalised Gift Ideas and Argos, is that obviously, the items which Argos are offering their customers can be put straight into the back of a lorry and sent to the customer, with little/no delay for personalisation, packing or gift wrapping. I think that for people who live in London, who stereotypically have busy lifestyles, this ’same-day delivery’ is a great idea, but do you think Argos will be able to uphold this promise to customers? Just think about the supply chain issues which are involved in making this sort of a decision….

  • Stock for a start – Think about how much stock the regional warehouses will have to hold to be able to uphold short lead times on Argos items around the busy streets of London.
  • Delivery Vans – A fair number of delivery vans will have to be put onto the roads to cope with the demand which Argos are expecting for their “Check & Reserve” service.
  • Complaints – When I read this story, I did immediately sense complaints. If Argos customers are only at home for one day and their delivery does not arrive… I don’t imagine they would be too happy with the new speedy “Shutl delivery” service.

To conclude…

Do you think that Argos will be able to uphold this delivery commitment? Do you think that online customers expect things to be with them far too quickly?

In our line of work, there are many people who are thrilled that their orders arrive within the week, but there are others who think that ordering personalised pencils on a Friday (last minute) and receiving them the following Wednesday is unacceptable. No matter what you do, there are always customers who will have different views towards delivery times…. but to offer ’same-day’ delivery could, in my opinion, be a bad move.

All thoughts are welcome as always.

Company Facebook Pages

August 3rd, 2010

Company Facebook Pages appear to be on the increase yet when we were looking for a benchmark we couldn’t fail to note how many were showing signs of underuse or just downright neglect.

Some company profiles show signs of lavish TLC with HTML coding in FBML tabs whilst others are little better than a personal profile … so how far should a company take their Facebook presence?

It really does come down to two factors: What resources does the company have and how active are they on attracting a steady stream of new friends (fans).

Our view at PGI is to invest time, energy and resources into building a Facebook profile that will be considered a benchmark for many. With a team of Graphic Designers and Facebook savy employees we have maintained an active facebook presence and are now adding further customised aspects to improve our look even further.

We look forward to sharing our latest improvements with everyone and hope they enhance our very active user experience on a meaningful level.
